When Pop passed in 2001, Maw was lost without him. As you know she suffered short-term memory problems resulting from her massive heart attack in 2000 and needed assisted care living services. With the wonderful support of dear friends and family, Maureen lived at St. Mary's Manor until late one cold night, she had been left in the street to wait for a cab to take her from the Manor to hospital with no staff support or medical records. The family felt she needed additional care. We discussed options with Maureen and she decided to move down to New Brunswick. Though she missed her friends very much and felt her new home at Royal Court was "a bit too grand" for her, she adjusted quite well.

Maureen enjoyed going on the scheduled outings, musicals, barbeques, and other fun activities ..... even the exercise classes. The short term memory problems served as a blessing in disguise. Maureen saw familiar faces on everyone - the past and present blending so there were no strangers. She happily chatted long hours with her friends, old and new. Naturally, she did have a few complaints. "... I'm not used to being treated as a lady of leisure" was her biggest one. Then there was "... I don't need to go to the hair dresser every week," but of course she went anyways and "... I can do my own laundry".......which she managed for a time, hanging things around her room until the staff learned to be quicker then she. Maureen did keep them on their toes and they loved every minute of it.

In her final month, she was bed-ridden, very weak but still maintained her sense of humour almost to the end. The nurses took turns sitting with her day and night. She was one of their favourite residents. They admired her feistiness, humour, and friendly manner. The staff also loved her occasional quips in French as it was so unexpected. She slipped away peacefully in her sleep with the nurse sitting beside her. What more could anyone ask?

We will miss her greatly, especially her wisdom, her quick retorts, her inquiring mind and her loving heart. It was hard to see her go, but now she is with Pop and she will give him an ear full for leaving her behind. Our hearts are with them both.]]>

Even though I have not been able to visit with her in recent years (since I have been in school and she has been living out in New Brunswick), she has still been in my thoughts.

She will be very missed by myself, my brothers, and my Mom and Dad. I wish I could be home in Canada now to pay my respects at her service and to give my Dad a giant hug. I know this is a difficult loss for everybody and my heart is with everyone there.

Love,
Sarah Urquhart]]>
